With a few exceptions, most piercings will take 8-12 months to fully heal.
You will notice no discomfort or discharge from your piercing once it is fully healed.

For any external piercings (ie. facial, ears, body) you will want to clean the piercing once a day using a mild non-scented anti-bacterial soap and saline solution. Natural non-iodized sea salt is a preferred saline solution, but over the counter solutions will work as well. If using the non-iodized sea salt, use 1 tablespoon of sea salt to 8oz. of water. Mix the solution well, use a separate container for single use purposes, and soak the piercing site for about 3-5 minutes just once a day after mildly cleaning it with the non-scented anti-bacterial soap. This is recommended to do before bed or after a shower.
For oral piercings, you will want to mouthwash with anti-septic mouthwash after every drink and meal. Stay away from smoking/alcohol for a minimum of 6 weeks. Dairy is also not recommended for the first 6 weeks, as well.
Stay out of open water. Do not submerge your fresh piercing in any open water sources ie. pool, lake, ocean, bathtub. This can be a serious exposure to bacteria that could possibly infect your piercing. Showers are completely acceptable, and are recommended.
-
There is no sure way to make your piercing heal faster, but there are steps you can take to insure the healing process is as smooth as possible.
The less contact, the better. Twisting your piercing, sleeping on it, or touching it with unwashed hands can render the healing process.
Over-cleaning the piercing will cause issues. This will dry the piercing out and can possibly cause irritation bumps.
Make sure to downsize the piercing after 6-8 weeks. Longer jewelry is used to compensate for swelling when the piercing is initially performed. Once the swelling is calmed, the initial jewelry can cause irritation if pressure is put on it because of the length. It is not always the same for everyone and their anatomy, so make sure to check with your piercer to see if it is time to downsize.
